The deadline to submit a 2025 HPNA Award application has passed. The 2026 HPNA Awards submission form will open February 1, 2025

Champion Award: The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Champion Award, formerly known as the Presidential Citation Award, is awarded to an individual or organization who has made a significant impact on hospice and palliative care through advocacy, community involvement, or practice. Nominees from all disciplines are encouraged Awardee receives plaque, travel to HPNA Annual conference (if applicable) and 1 night hotel stay.

Distinguished Nursing Practice Award:  This award recognizes a nurse who has long provided care for individuals with serious illness and their families in a manner that has clearly gone well beyond the ‘usual and expected’ requirements. The award recognizes a nurse whose clinical practice is exemplary and who is generous in mentoring other clinicians. The recipient is chosen by the HPNA Board of Directors.  Awardee receives award, travel to HPNA Annual Conference (if applicable) and 1 night hotel stay.

Distinguished Nursing Researcher Award: The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Distinguished Nursing Researcher Award recognizes a nurse researcher who has demonstrated longevity and consistency in research that advances the mission and vision of HPNA through conducting high quality research and research presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The HPNA Research Advisory Committee will make recommendations to the HPNA Board of Directors for approval. Awardee receives crystal award, travel to HPNA Annual Conference (if applicable) and 1 night hotel stay. 

New Investigator Award: The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association New Investigator Award recognizes the work of an individual in the beginning of his or her research career who has done quality research which can be a pilot or preliminary study that focused on clinical care, professional development, or advancement of palliative nursing. Nominations will be screened by the HPNA Research Advisory Committee who will make recommendations to the HPNA Board of Directors for approval.  Awardee receives award, travel to the event (if applicable) and 1 night hotel stay. 

Vanguard Award: The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Vanguard Award, previously known as the Leading the Way Award, recognizes a nursing leader who advances the field of hospice and palliative nursing and is someone who has made a major contribution that has national impact for hospice and palliative care. The recipient is recognized for outstanding leadership skills and commitment to the vision of HPNA and to our Pillars of Excellence: Advocacy, Education, Research, and Leadership. Nominations will be screened by the HPNA Awards Selection Committee who will make recommendations to the HPNA Board of Directors for approval. Awardee receives crystal award, travel to the event (if applicable), 3 nights hotel stay and HPNA Annual Conference registration. 

Volunteerism Award:  The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Volunteerism Award recognizes an HPNA volunteer who demonstrates an ongoing commitment to serve the mission of HPNA through volunteerism. The award recipient will have assisted or lead an HPNA project that greatly benefited the members of the association. The recipient will have displayed a considerable commitment in terms of time donated, amount of responsibility assumed, and longevity of the project’s impact. The recipient’s contributions must be of an extraordinary nature, Activities involving monetary compensation are not eligible for this award. Awardee will be a member of HPNA for at least two years. Current HPNA, HPCC, HPNF Board members are not eligible. Awardee receives award, travel to HPNA Annual conference (if applicable), 1 night hotel stay.
